Information about New York City

Spent Magazine is set in Manhattan, which is one of five boroughs that makes up the city of New York. As such, the majority - if not all of the employees at Spent - will live somewhere in New York.

There are five boroughs in the city: Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. There is also Long Island, that despite not being part of the city itself, is geographically close and as such, could be an ideal home for your character.

Manhattan is an island that is approximately twenty miles square in size. It is separated from the Bronx by the Harlem river on the north, from Queens and Brooklyn by the Hudson River on the west, and from the mainland United States by the East River on the, um, east. It is split into 'east' and 'west' Manhattan by Fifth Avenue. The streets running east-west are numbered, and they are either 'west' or 'east' dependent upon what side of Fifth Avenue the address is.

Central Park is a 2.5 mile square park in the centre of Manhattan. Bound by Fifth Avenue on the east, Central Park West on the west, West 110th Street on the North, and West 59th Street on the South. There are man made lakes, jogging trails, a wildlife sanctuary and it is popular with bird watchers. There are also skating rinks in the winter, and often outdoor events in the summer. While it is known to be somewhat dangerous at night, this reputation has waned as the city has taken measures to decrease violent crime.

Manhattan is one of the most densely populated places in the United States and world in general, with a population of 1.6 million as of 2005. The financial centre of New York City (and some would say all of the United States), and many corporations have their head offices in Manhattan. It is also home to the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ. It's public transportation system - the subway and buses - are considered to be one of the most efficient and widely used in the world. The financial district is located on the southern tip of the island, while the business district (and the location of Spent's offices) is located in Midtown. For more information on Midtown, click here.

Manhattan is split into uptown, midtown, and downtown, with divisions on the east and west. Fifth Avenue is, as said before, the divide between east and west, but it is also the most expensive shopping street in the world.

The closer you get to midtown, the more expensive the housing will be, in general. The most expensive neighhourhood is the Upper East Side, while choosing to live in Harlem or Morningside Heights will be less expensive. The trendy neighbourhoods downtown were once home to artists and lower income people, but as the population has grown swiftly over the years, the cost of living in areas like SoHo, the East Village, Chelsea, and Hell's Kitchen have moved swiftly upwards. If your character is on a budget, looking into Harlem, Brooklyn, the Bronx, or Queen's can be good alternatives, as many of the neighbourhoods in these areas are newly revitalized, and as such are safe, more colourful alternatives to living in Manhattan.

The following links are to be helpful and give you a better idea what to look for in New York. Wikipedia has a wealth of information for those with the patience to look through it.

If you require assistance to find a place for your character to live, leave a comment at the CONTACT THE MODS page with their prospective apartment, (bedrooms? Safety of neighbhourhood?) salary, preferred distance to work (do they mind the commute?) and the amount they'd shell out for an apartment, a mod will get back to you with some prospective neighbourhood links. We've done a lot of digging around this, but it'd take ages (and too much typing) to stick it all up here.
